Dear Mr Henshaw Final Project.docx

Pulling from Words Their Way, I create weekly word work stations. Here, a student uses his list of vocabulary words and magnetic word pieces to practice making sentences.

Integrating technology and practicing typing, students fill out a plot diagram on their iPads for the short video being played. The plot diagram are housed in Google Drive and can easily be shared with myself or other students.

A student presents her diorama book report by explaining why she chose to recreate this scene. Students practiced comprehension, time managements, creativity, and public speaking skills for this project.

I love teaching non-fiction skills using our real materials. A student finds examples of different text features in her math textbook which helps her understand what information the text features provide and how to find useful information in her math book.

Often, our Literacy Night event falls during our figurative language unit so, students drew pictures of an idioms literal and figurative meaning to be displayed. The picture shows a literal "brainstorm."

During our RTI time, students in an enrichment group focus on character traits in a novel. A student creates a pretend Facebook page for the main character in the novel he has chosen to read for book club. This activity required students to think critically and abstractly about the characters in their books.

At the end of each book club session students choose from several options for how to demonstrate their understanding of the themes and events in the story. Here students discuss how to act out a chosen scene from their novel. This is a great way to practice comprehension and collaboration.

Using our Benchmark curriculum, students shared inferences they could make about this photograph ("it's Spring" "She has allergies" "She's allergic to those plants") on post-its before discussing their findings as a group and linking this skill to their own reading.

This group of students works on a Reader's Theater play, practicing their fluency while learning new vocabulary words and historical information.
